Hôm nay, dân biểu Anh “Joseph” Cao (LA-02) đã từ chối lời kêu gọi của chính phủ Việt Nam nhằm giúp đỡ sắp đặt một cuộc gặp gỡ với cộng đồng người Mỹ gốc Việt.

Quyết định của ông Cao nằm trong một lá thư trả lời với phó bộ trưởng Nguyễn Thanh Sơn. Nguyễn Thanh Sơn đã viết cho Cao, yêu cầu sự giúp đỡ của vị dân biểu này tổ chức một cuộc gặp mặt để chính phủ Việt Nam có thể cung cấp những thông tin đúng đắn về Việt Nam. Vị phó bộ trưởng nói ông tin rằng sự hiểu lầm là nguyên nhân mà cộng đồng người Mỹ gốc Việt lên án chính quyền Việt Nam.

Trong bức thư hồi đáp, dân biểu Cao nói rằng tiền đề của cuộc kế hoạch gặp gỡ là lệch lạc. Cao xác quyết rằng người Mỹ gốc Việt rời bỏ quê nhà không phải bởi vì sự hiểu lầm mà là họ cự tuyệt sự tàn ác của của chủ nghĩa cộng sản. Dân biểu Cao cũng nhấn mạnh cho đến khi nào chính quyền Việt Nam biểu hiện sự thay đổi thực sự liên quan đến tự do và nhân quyền thì lời kêu gọi “hòa giải” mới được cân nhắc nghiêm túc bởi cộng đồng người Mỹ gốc Việt.

Dân biểu Cao đưa ra những bước cụ thể để chính quyền Việt Nam có thể làm để biểu hiện thiện chí, như là thả tất cả tù nhân lương tâm, tôn trọng tự do tôn giáo, chấm dứt sự trấn áp những nhà hoạt động dân chủ và thể hiện sự tôn trọng nền tảng pháp luật bằng cách xét xử nhằm bồi thường cho những nạn nhân buôn người trong vụ Daewoosa American Samoa.

Today, Congressman Anh “Joseph” Cao (LA-02) rejected the Vietnamese government's request for help arranging a meeting with the Vietnamese-American community.

Cao's decision came in a letter to Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Son. Deputy Minister Son had written Cao, requesting the Congressman's help facilitating the meeting so the Vietnamese government can provide "correct information" about Vietnam. The Deputy Minister said he believed that miscommunication is the cause for the Vietnamese-American community's condemnation of the Vietnamese government. In his reply letter, Congressman Cao says the premise for the proposed meeting is misguided. Cao affirmed that the Vietnamese-Americans left their homeland not because of "misunderstanding" but because they rejected the tyranny of communism. Congressman Cao also stressed that until the government of Vietnam has demonstrated real changes related to freedom and human rights, calls for reconciliation will not be taken seriously by the Vietnamese-American community.

Congressman Cao outlines the specific steps the government of Vietnam can take to demonstrate its goodwill, such as: release all prisoners of conscience, respect for religious freedom, termination of oppression of democracy activists and demonstration of respect for the rule of law by paying the victims of the Daewoosa American Samoa human trafficking case as adjudicated by law.
