Hanoi - Some 2,000 out of 3,000 workers at a Taiwan-owned garment and footwear company in Vietnam staged a three-day wildcat strike this week, a police official said Friday. Deputy police chief Dinh Thanh Tam said workers at the De Vuong company had struck from Tuesday to Thursday.
"They only protested peacefully, so we did not do anything against them," Tam said.
Workers asked the company to increase salaries and award their bonuses for Tet, the lunar new year, on time. The number of strikes in Vietnam typically rise before Tet, scheduled this year for February 14.
The state-run newspaper Thanh Nien reported Friday that the company had barred local officials from mediating the strike, and had fired Ly Thanh, chairman of the company trade union.
