Nghị viên Milton Dick, khu vực Richlands kính mời quý vị đến tham dự Lễ khánh thành Công trường Tự Do (Freedom Place), tại công viên Kev Hooper, đường Abelia, Inala, để tưởng nhớ và vinh danh những người Việt tỵ nạn.
Nghị viên Dick chia sẻ: “Từ lúc trở thành nghị viên Richlands, tôi đã nghe nhiều về gương chiến đấu anh dũng của người Việt chống lại chế độ cộng sản và những câu chuyện thương tâm của quý vị trên bước đường tìm tự do.
“Nhiều người đã có thân nhân bỏ mình trong đại dương khi vượt biển.
“Cho nên theo tôi, việc xây dựng một nơi tưởng niệm vĩnh cửu để ghi nhớ và vinh danh những người đã bỏ mình cho tự do là một việc nên làm .”
Nghị viên Dick đã làm việc với những vị lãnh đạo trong cộng đồng người Việt kể từ khi ông đắc cử để xây dựng Công trường Tự Do. Nghị viên Dick nói:
“Tôi đã sử dụng tài khoản $100,000 của Hội Đồng Thành Phố Brisbane để thực hiện ước mơ của chúng ta là xây dựng một nơi tưởng niệm vĩnh cửu tại Inala. Tôi ghi nhận là nhiều gia đình người Việt đã chọn Inala và những vùng lân cận để sinh sống.
Vì vậy việc xây dựng một nơi tưởng niệm tại công viên Kew Hooper, môt trong những công viên chính, giữa trung tâm Inala là chuyện hợp lý.
Tôi cũng xin cám ơn cộng đồng người Việt đã kiên nhẫn và đã góp phần cho đề án này.
Đây là sự đóng góp nhỏ bé của tôi trong việc ghi nhận sự hy sinh của những người đã bỏ mình trên bước đường tìm tự do, và sự đóng góp của những người đã nhận nước Úc là quê hương.”
Tôi hy vọng là Công trường Tự Do sẽ là nơi mà mọi người có thể đến để suy tư và tưởng nhớ đến những người đã mất.
Lễ khánh thành sẽ được tổ chức tại công viên Kev Hooper, cạnh Hội trường Sinh Hoạt Cao Niên, đường Abelia, Inala vào ngày thứ Bảy 14 tháng 5 năm 2011.
Buổi lễ sẽ cử hành vào lúc 10 giờ sáng.

Ladies and gentlemen,
First please allow me to thank the organizing commitee for inviting me to say the Words of Thanks at this very important occasion. I feel very honoured.
Second please accept my apologies for the general salutations with which I opened this speech due to the time constraint that I have been given.
So as not to waste any more time, I would like to start by saying that to me, for this important place and for this historic occasion, I think there are only 2 F-words that can aptly describe it. (I can see some of you raise your eyebrows there).
The first F-word is Freedom. This place is named Freedom Place, yet what is Freedom ? Is it, as defined linguistically by the Macquarie dictionary, “ the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action” ? Or is it in more simple terms “the ability to do anything that one likes ?”.
They – and other definitions- may all be correct. But to me, every time I hear the word Freedom, the song “Me and Bobby McGee” comes back to my mind. Now if any of you know the song, you would remember that beautiful line of lyric by Kris Kristofferson
”Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose”.
Think about it. That is so correct, isn’t it, especially in the case of refugees … like us !! We had nothing left to lose … except our lives. So we took the ultimate gamble that human beings can ever comtemplate … our lives … Freedom or our Life. And you all know the odds really stacked against us ! But we had no choice, no option, no ifs, no buts.. just had to leave, not for our future but for the next generations.
That leads me to the 2nd F-word: Friendship.
Any local councillor can work with a community about their day-to-day business. But it takes a friend, a true friend, to understand the heartache, the sorrow and the struggle that we have been going through. And it takes a true friend to have the vision of a place for us to reminisce on our journey to Freedom. This friend has spent not hours, not days, not weeks, but months to lobby, to co-ordinate the design and the construction to finally transform this vision into reality so that we can have our opening today.
This friend that I’m referring to, ladies and gentlemen, is of course Cr. Milton Dick. Milton, the community will forever be grateful for your grand efforts to have this wonderful project completed.
Of course the contributions by Dr Cuong Bui and his team of the Vietnamese Community in Australia, Qld Chapter, by Mr Phung Huynh and his team of Republic of Vietnam Veterans Association of Qld, by Mr To Do and his Vietnamese Seniors Association in Qld, are also acknowledged.
Last but not least at all, one person deserves special accolades: your MC for today, Ms Phuong Nguyen. Not only for her smooth and capable conducting of today’s ceremony but also for all the background work that I’ve the privilege to know that she put in to have this ceremony so meaningful and successful. Thank you Phuong.
Finally I’d like to share with you another piece of good news. That I received a reply from Read Admiral Ken Doolan (retd), President of the Australin RSL, in response to our petition with nearly 1,000 signatures regarding the proposed march with the VC next year to mark the 50th anniversary of the Australian involvement in the VN War.
I do not have time to read the whole letter so I just extract one critical sentence “We do not expect and are not planning for immediate change in attitudes or commemorations”.
To me, that is a very positive step by the RSL.
