Bộ Ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ vừa lên tiếng về việc bắt giữ luật sư Lê Công Định.
Chiều ngày thứ Hai, Người phát ngôn Bộ Ngoại giao, ông Ian Kelly ra thông cáo nói rằng Hoa Kỳ quan tâm sâu sắc trước sự kiện nhà chức trách Việt Nam bắt giam ông Lê Công Định hôm thứ bảy, và buộc ông vào tội 'tuyên truyền chống nhà nước.'
Các quan chức Việt Nam nói rằng ông Định bị bắt vì bênh vực các nhà hoạt động đòi dân chủ và đã sử dụng Internet để bày tỏ quan điểm của mình.
Luật sư Lê Công Định là một thành viên được kính trọng của cộng đồng luật gia Việt Nam và quốc tế, ông đã tham gia chương trình Fulbright của Hoa Kỳ.
Thông cáo của Bộ Ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ cho biết: không thể bắt giam một người nào đó vì người này bày tỏ quyền tự do phát biểu, và không thể trừng phạt một luật sư vì người này đã chọn thân chủ nào để biện hộ.
Cuối cùng thông cáo cho biết: việc bắt giữ Luật sư Lê Công Định đã đi ngược với cam kết của chính phủ Việt Nam là sẽ tuân thủ các chuẩn mực được quốc tế chấp nhận liên quan đến nhân quyền và chế độ pháp quyền.
Hoa Kỳ kêu gọi chính phủ Việt Nam trả tự do tức khắc và vô điều kiện cho Luật sư Định cũng như tất cả các tù nhân khác đang còn bị giam cầm vì đã bày tỏ quan điểm của họ một cách ôn hòa.

Vietnam: Arrest of Lawyer Le Cong Dinh

The United States is deeply concerned by the arrest by Vietnamese authorities of lawyer Le Cong Dinh on June 13 on charges of “distributing propaganda against the state.” Vietnamese officials have stated that Dinh was arrested because of his defense of pro-democracy activists and his use of the Internet to express his views.
Mr. Dinh is a well-respected member of the Vietnamese and international legal communities, and a former Fulbright scholar. No individual should be arrested for expressing the right to free speech, and no lawyer should be punished because of the individuals they choose to counsel.
Vietnam’s arrest of Mr. Dinh contradicts the government’s own commitment to internationally-accepted standards of human rights and to the rule of law. We urge the Government of Vietnam to release Mr. Dinh immediately and unconditionally, as well as all other prisoners in detention for peacefully expressing their views.

Bộ Ngoại giao Mỹ vừa ra thông cáo bày tỏ quan ngại trước việc luật sư Lê Công Định bị bắt tại TP Hồ Chí Minh hôm thứ Bảy tuần trước.
Được biết vụ bắt LS Định cũng sẽ được đề cập tới trong cuộc đối thoại về nhân quyền giữa Việt Nam và Liên hiệp châu Âu tổ chức hôm thứ Ba 16/06 tại Hà Nội.
Đây là cơ chế trao đổi quan điểm về nhân quyền giữa EU và Việt Nam, tổ chức một năm hai lần.

Người phát ngôn Bộ Ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ Ian Kelly viết trong thông cáo ra tại Washington hôm 15/06: "Hoa Kỳ quan ngại sâu sắc về việc nhà chức trách Việt Nam bắt LS Lê Công Định hôm 13/06 vì tội "Tuyên truyền chống nhà nước". Giới chức Việt Nam đã nói rằng ông Định bị bắt vì ông bảo vệ các nhân vật đấu tranh dân chủ và vì ông đã sử dụng mạng internet để bày tỏ quan điểm của mình".
Thông cáo viết: "Ông Định là thành viên được kính trọng trong cộng đồng luật gia Việt Nam và quốc tế, đồng thời là cựu học giả Fulbright".
"Không thể bắt bất kỳ cá nhân nào vì bày tỏ quyền tự do ngôn luận và không thể trừng phạt bất kỳ luật sư nào vì thân chủ mà họ chọn bào chữa."

Ông Lê Công Định từng là luật sư biện hộ cho các luật sư bất đồng chính kiến Nguyễn Văn Đài và Lê Thị Công Nhân, cũng như blogger Điều Cày (nhà báo tự do Nguyễn Văn Hải).
Thông cáo của Bộ Ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ viết tiếp: "Việc Việt Nam bắt ông Định đã đi ngược lại với chính cam kết của chính phủ trước các tiêu chuẩn được quốc tế công nhận về nhân quyền và pháp trị".
"Chúng tôi yêu cầu Chính phủ Việt Nam thả ông Định ngay lập tức và vô điều kiện, cũng như trả tự do cho tất cả các tù nhân đang bị giam cầm vì bày tỏ chính kiến của mình một cách hòa bình."

Quốc tế lên tiếng

Trước đó, một số tổ chức quốc tế khác cũng đã lên tiếng đòi trả tự do cho LS Lê Công Định.
Tổ chức Phóng viên không Biên giới (Reporters Without Borders - RSF) nói ông phải được thả ngay lập tức.
Thông cáo của RSF viết: "Tại một quốc gia pháp quyền, một luật sư khi bảo vệ thân chủ của mình có quyền công bố các bằng chứng trước tòa và trên báo chí".
"Chúng tôi lo ngại rằng vụ bắt giữ này nhằm để trừng phạt một nhân vật đáng kính trọng, người thúc đẩy pháp quyền ở Việt Nam."
Tổ chức theo dõi tự do báo chí này nhận xét: "Sau khi sách nhiễu các nhà báo hoạt động cho báo chí tự do và người Công giáo, chính quyền nay tấn công các luật sư, thành trì cuối cùng của các quyền tự do."

Tổ chức Ân xá Quốc tế (Amnesty International) cũng bày tỏ lo ngại về vụ xảy ra hôm 13/06 tuy đang cố gắng tìm kiếm thêm thông tin.
Bà Janice Beanland, phụ trách Đông Nam Á của Amnesty international, nói với BBC: "Tôi cũng lo ngại chính quyền Việt Nam có khuynh hướng dùng ngôn ngữ kích động khi nói về các nhà bất đồng chính kiến và trong nhiều trường hợp, những điều đó về sau này được chứng minh là không đúng".

The US government has said it was "deeply concerned" by the arrest in Vietnam of activist lawyer Le Cong Dinh and has called for his release.
The Paris-based group, Reporters Without Borders, also called for his immediate release, noting his work in defending bloggers and activists.
Mr Dinh was arrested on 13 June on charges of "distributing propaganda against the state".
Officials said he was arrested over his defence of pro-democracy activists.
They also said he was arrested over his use of the internet to express his views.
The police said they will charge Mr Dinh with article 88 of Vietnam's criminal code for distributing anti-government materials.
Mr Dinh, 41, one of Vietnam's most respected lawyers, has defended a number of pro-democracy activists in the past.

Mining complaint?

"Mr Dinh is a well-respected member of the Vietnamese and international legal communities, and a former Fulbright scholar," US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said.
"No individual should be arrested for expressing the right to free speech, and no lawyer should be punished because of the individuals they choose to counsel," he said.
Mr Kelly said the arrest contradicts the Vietnamese government's "own commitment to internationally-accepted standards of human rights and to the rule of law".
He urged the Vietnamese government to release Mr Dinh immediately and unconditionally, as well as all other prisoners in detention for peacefully expressing their views.
Reporters Without Borders noted that Mr Dinh had defended several bloggers and free-speech activists, and faces a long prison sentence for his articles and commentaries in the Vietnamese press and online.
The Paris-based press freedom group reported several sources saying that his arrest could be linked to a complaint filed by several Vietnamese lawyers against the government about the granting of a bauxite mine concession to a Chinese company, a case which has caused an outcry in Vietnam.
"We fear that this arrest is aimed at punishing a respected man who promotes the cause of the rule of law in Vietnam," Reporters Without Borders said.
Le Cong Dinh has defended lawyers Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan, and the renowned blogger Dieu Cay.

Reporters Without Borders today called on Vietnam to immediately release the lawyer Le Cong Dinh, author of many pro-democracy articles and a known human rights activist, who was arrested two days ago.
The 41-year-old lawyer, who has defended several bloggers and free expression activists, is facing a long prison sentence for his articles and commentaries in the Vietnamese press and online.
He was arrested on 13 June 2009 for allegedly “plotting to overthrow the government”, according to Vietnamese journalists who spoke to Reporters Without Borders. Le has no political affiliation but writes regularly about human rights.
The police told the press that he would be charged under Article 88 of the criminal law that punishes the distribution of news and information hostile to the state. The lawyer is charged with using the trials of some of his clients to damage the state and to have “colluded with foreign-based and internal reactionaries to sabotage the Vietnamese state”.
Deputy director general of the public security department, Vu Hai Trieu, said he had collected “a lot documents and evidence showing attempts to overthrow the Vietnamese state”.
Several sources said his arrest could be linked to a complaint laid by several Vietnamese lawyers against the head of government Nguyen Tan Dung about the granting of a bauxite mine concession to a Chinese company, a case which has caused an outcry in Vietnam.
“In a state which applies the rule of law, a lawyer defending his clients has the right to make facts public before a court and in the press. We fear that this arrest is aimed at punishing a respected man who promotes the cause of the rule of law in Vietnam”, the worldwide press freedom organisation said.
“After intimidating journalists working for the liberal press and the Catholics, the government is now attacking lawyers, the final bulwark in the defence of freedoms,” it said.
